What is actually a geode? It is a hollow stone embedded in a layer of rock different from the mineral composing the outer shell of the geode. This is a pretty good definition, taken from a webpage where you can read about all the other possible crystal habits . But since a picture is worth a thousand words, written or spoken never mind, here is a nice example to illustrate what kind of natural object this is.
Apart from agate geodes which are quite common, celestite geodes which are more rare, and some citrine geodes which I am pretty certain were made by artificially treating amethyst specimens ( if I am wrong please correct me, but I do not believe there are genuine natural citrine geodes) there is hardly any other type you will ever encounter in your average local mineral stores. There is hardly a remote possibility that you would ever see a green amethyst geode either. But, what sets apart amethyst geodes from any other type of geode is the variety of shapes and sizes they can be found in.
The geode shown above is rather small really --- it measures 8 inches in diameter, which is a dimension not uncommon for agate but is considered very tiny in the world of amethyst geodes. The average sized geode would measure something like 15 to 20 inches, but there are geodes of immense proportion. One of the largest found is the The Empress of Uruguay. What is really fantastic is that you are allowed to touch it, so if you are in the neighborhood don't miss the chance. Here is a YouTube video about it:
Just for the sake of reference, the largest geode regardless of type of mineral involved is the one discovered in Spain, the so called Almeria Geode. This one is made of perfect transparent gypsum (Calcium sulphate) crystals.
The Cost of Amethyst Geodes
If you are considering buying this wondrous natural object, you should know that they can be very costly. The smaller ones can be relatively inexpensive (if you can find them --- they are more rare), but this does not mean you can get them for nothing either. The larger ones can cost several hundreds of dollars each, and the price is very much dependent on the size and weight. It is not uncommon for them to be as costly as several hundreds of dollars for a sizable specimen. Forget about purchasing really large geodes from amethyst like the one in the video above though.
The one in the link bellow weights 1lb, 9.6oz (0.76kg), and its dimensions are 3.8"H x 3.8"W x 3.1"D (96 x 96 x 79mm).

Metaphysical Properties of Amethyst Geodes
While individual crystals are excellent for personal use (here is an overview of amethyst's properties and meanings), geodes are objects ideal for purification of larger areas, such as your living and working space. You can also use them in your self growth and personal development purposes, but you should be aware that here you will have to withstand the power of a number of crystals joined together that magnify and transmit energy with higher intensity.
Some new age practices recommend them for cleansing other crystals. I have never used my amethyst geode for purification of other minerals and gemstones, since I use it mainly for environmental cleansing and other equally important tasks. I believe it is possible to use it for that purpose though. Actually it offers a natural surroundings for cleaning crystals --- just place one or several of them within its powerful cave and let it stay there overnight. The subtle energy field of those countless little points will be a very efficient purificator. Not only that, you will get your stones charged with powerful vibration either.
As I said, there is no better purpose for a geode to perform than cleaning the space in my flat from all the negative vibrations that might enter it, mostly via other people's thoughts and feelings. It also promotes peace and calm, helping achieving meditative states more easily and maintaining them for a longer periods of time.
A programmed geode can be a very powerful tool as well. I will not go into detail here as to what the procedures of programming crystals, individual or aggregates are, but it is sufficient to say that what you can achieve with one stone is here multiplied by a factor of hundred. Just imagine hundreds of little termination amplifying your own intention and motivation (which is always positive and for the good of all, remember). Still, it is not as easy to program them as it is to program rock crystal.
Healing with Amethyst Geode
Amethyst geodes are so marvelous natural mineral objects that I have never seen a person --- being into crystals minerals and semi precious stones or not --- who hasn't been attracted to them from the very first moment they have spotted them. If you have one in your possession you know what I am talking about. If you don't, there is no better advice but to tell you to find a way to obtain one. Whenever you feel down you can seat near to it, and let the amethyst geode's beneficial metaphysical light beams flow over your head and body and balance your own inner subtle energies for some time. Its healing effect might not be immediately visible, but it is perpetually affecting your aura improving your health condition, that's for sure.
